Jim Motter

I was raised one of six children in a wonderful family in Indiana. Although I attended a Baptist Church until the age of eleven, ours was a family of “apatheists.” I believed in God, but an ardent indifference toward Christianity led me away from the church, a diversion that lasted decades. Thankfully, God did not allow my unenlightenment to go unchallenged. My faith journey has been rich with extraordinary spiritual influences – an unexpected encounter with a mysterious minister, a wonderful wife with a steadfast faith, and the good fortune of knowing Dr. Frank Harrington of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. Through these people, and others, I came to know the real Jesus.

My wife, Mary Ellen, introduced me to Dr. Harrington, who in turn convinced me that belief is not merely a matter of faith, but one of logic. Through him, I was exposed to the great thoughts of great thinkers – first and foremost the incomparable C.S. Lewis, but also G.K. Chesterton, Francis Schaeffer, and in the ensuing years others such as Os Guinness and Peter Kreeft.

My passion is to introduce seekers to the writings of Lewis and other relevant philosophers, theologians and cultural prognosticators. My purpose is not to convert, but to convince them to search for truth with an active and uncluttered mind. It is my hope they will reject “chronological snobbery” as propagated by the academy, but to consider with fresh eyes the timeless wisdom of the ages. More importantly, to instill an understanding that ideas – especially those foisted upon us by a metastasizing secularism – have consequences. For to think these through is to know we are on the wrong road. It is to that end that I laud and support the efforts of Jefrey Breshears and the ministry of The Areopagus.
