Course Description:
This class focuses on the history and theology of modern “progressive” Christianity, tracing its roots from early Christian heresies such as Gnosticism, neo-Platonism and Arianism to the emergence of unitarianism in the 18th century, the Social Gospel movement of the late 19th century, and contemporary Liberation Theology.

As Jesus prophesied — and as the apostles Paul, Peter, John and Jude addressed in their writings — variations on the pure gospel emerged in the very first century of Christianity, proliferated over the next 300 years, and then later reemerged during the Enlightenment and Romantic eras. Today, many want to “reimagine” Christianity in keeping with current social, cultural and moral trends. In order to effectively counter these impulses, it is imperative that we understand where ‘Progressive’ Christianity came from, how it distorts and perverts the true faith, and how we can respond effectively in upholding authentic biblical Christianity.
